It looks like misheard lyrics are bigger on Gootube than all the shows combined (like Ask a Ninja). Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the humor – especially when it comes at the expense of Scandinavian metal bands!

Here’s a few tips from Cinetech on how to get better results from Youtube’s encoder.

1. Learn to shoot better quality videos for the Web.

2. Your source video needs to be ideally high resolution. For instance: MOV or AVI file, NTSC 720×480 or VGA 640×480.

3. You need to get a high quality video encoder. Keep in mind that most video editing programs such as Apple Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, Windows Movie Maker or Sony Vegas, come with an encoding engine so you can export your videos directly from the timeline.

4. YouTube resizes your videos to 320×240 pixels, encodes them to Flash 7 at a data rate of approximately 250 kbps and compresses audio to mp3 (22.050 KHz, monophonic).

5. It’s very important that you keep an aspect ratio of 4:3, otherwise the quality of your video will be severely impaired.

6. YouTube recommended settings are:

* MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
* 320×240 resolution
* MP3 audio
* 30 frames per second

Youtube should probably improve their side of the “equation” as well. They do have director accounts so maybe they could test the water by providing more encoding options for them and see what happens

Apple TV vs indie producers

As Apple TVs hit the street in number, there’s a lot of speculation about the marriage of the iTunes library to your HD TV.

Om Malik muses about the future for indie producers. It’s not Om’s sole opinion though, he’s quoting “industry experts attending the New Video Summit in San Jose, California.”

A nice quote from Jonathan Hoopes, an analyst with investment firm ThinkEquity:

As a digital media content delivery vehicle positioned in users’ living rooms, we think the AppleTV/iTunes combination could become as disruptive to legacy video purchase-and-consumption behavior as the iPod/iTunes combination has been to the traditional music business model.

I’m not so sure about the disruptive power though. Google Video was touted as a marketplace for indie producers when it first launched.

Waterborne was the first full-length movie to make a Gootube debut foregoing a more lucrative (but conventional) distributing offer. The result has been lackluster at best (read, it’s been a complete failure).

Youtube megamix

I’m trying to validate my theory about Youtube playlists half-life. My previous experience showed me that a list of Marilyn Manson videos had 75% of video dissappear over a two-week period.

Now, I have a sample that could actually let me calculate it in a scientific manner. This list of youtube music videos contains 11,500 songs, spanning all genres.

I plan to revisit it in two weeks, assuming it’s 100% fresh now. I must confess I’ve tested it quite a bit though I haven’t touched Donna Summer or some of the other disco legends!

Youtube problem with Quicktime

I just tried uploading a Quicktime (.MOV) file to Youtube. I got no error, everything went smoothly but this is what the video looks like:

The video codec is Sorenson 3, the audio is encoded as MP3 and plays fine. Anyone else had this problem?

iPhone parody

Gootube is an amazing productivity killer. A colleague of mine just sent me this parody of an iPhone commercial.

Seriously though, I’d love to see if the iPhone can run online games like Star Control or maybe even Diablo!

Steve Jobs day

Macworld starts today in San Francisco and the hype machine is churning all kinds of Apple news.

Most of the speculation centers around two anticipated products, both dubbed with Apple’s signature “i” prefix: iTV and iPhone.

The iTV is reportedly a digital video recording device and according to industry experts times more likely than the fabled iPhone.

Shaw Wu, an analyst with American Technology Research, said:

While our analysis continues to indicate (Apple’s) first cell phone is technically complete, its `go-to-market’ strategy continues to be a mystery and likely a gating factor.

That’s my gut feel as well – the iPhone has to wait till later in the year. As a consolation, we could soon be staring at a big screen iPod, better suited for video.

Apple iPhone

Although it’s too early to tell truth from fiction, it seems likely that Apple are working on a cell phone (dubbed iPhone by fans).

Most of the rumors center around Apple’s strength to create a streamlined, easy-to-use gadgets (like the iPod). I am thinking about the difference it could create for video.

Merging a video iPod and a phone could extend the reach of web video publishers. Gootube and other platforms that are being extended for mobile use could benefit as well.

One BIG question remains though – I’m not sure if Apple will make it an open platform. They could as well limit it to the iTunes store.

Youtube playlist’s half-life

Marc Cuban recently explained how making playlists in Youtube and then downloading them rivals Apple’s iTunes model for music and video downloads.

He’s right of course. I’ve done a few playlists myself with the same goal in mind. What was my surprise when I came back to one of these playlists 2 weeks later.

The playlist consisted of four songs by Marilyn Manson. That’s it. The first one played OK and then it hit the second one. No luck there – video removed. Same thing with the next and then next…

It turns out, my playlist lost an amazing 75% of tracks in a two-week period. So it’s either Gootube has stepped up their cleaning a hundred times, or they hate Marilyn Manson in particular.

iTunes vs. Gootubes

Just a month ago, an Apple-Youtube thing would’ve been a David-Goliath battle. I even doubt the two would even meet. But now that Google bought Youtube, it’s a whole different game (just ask Marc Cuban).

The conflict lies in the fact that while Apple is charging 1.99 for each music video you download, Youtube lets you do it for free. On top of that, Google struck a deal with three major music labels which basically makes nearly ALL youtube videos as legal as prostitution in Amsterdam. Here’s what Marc is pondering:

So we could have an interesting year of watching Apple to see if this change in where music is discovered impacts their competitive situation. Watching the labels to see how much they can get paid for licensing their catalogues. Will it be 15mm plus ad share per year or get sued ? What will other content providers who didnt get their 15mm think ? Will they sue to prove a point that you cant leave them out ? Will Google just write checks or give stock to the entire universe?

While we’re waiting, I recommend visiting a hilarious blog done by someone pretending to be Steve Jobs.
