There are two sections: On Demand and Live streaming. The live streaming is pretty self-explanatory – you tune in to CNBC as if you’re using a TV. (click to view the whole screen)

The “On demand” section provides you with access to shows you’ve missed. Or at least, that’s the theory. In practice, I wasn’t able to find a particular show I wanted to see again. It could be a search issue – the search is a FAR cry from Google Video.

The search results seem totally irrelevant - probably for lack of good meta data describing the video. You can still select from 10 or topical channels like Global stories, US stories, Europe stories, etc.

Is it worth $14 a month? I’d say it depends if you have easy access to CNBC or not. The videos are a bit slow and you’ll have a hard time to find a specific show you’ve missed. Till the end of June, CBNC has a special offer – $9.99 per month, so if it sounds like a deal – hurry up.

I’ve been a long time Sony fan, when it comes to camcorders (especially HD ones). So I’m pretty excited about this news bit from Sony!

David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said, “PLAYSTATION Eye is a great example of how we have moved forward so significantly with our technology. PLAYSTATION Eye has four times the resolution, twice the framerate and double the sensitivity of its predecessor EyeToy USB Camera. With the technology that we now have at our disposal we will be able to dramatically improve the communications experience enjoyed on PS3”.

Here’s the tech specs!

The resolution and the frame rate are nothing short of groundbreaking. I’m not sure it will only work with PS3 though, USB 2 makes it PC-ready as well.

Om Malik muses about the future for indie producers. It’s not Om’s sole opinion though, he’s quoting “industry experts attending the New Video Summit in San Jose, California.”

A nice quote from Jonathan Hoopes, an analyst with investment firm ThinkEquity:

As a digital media content delivery vehicle positioned in users’ living rooms, we think the AppleTV/iTunes combination could become as disruptive to legacy video purchase-and-consumption behavior as the iPod/iTunes combination has been to the traditional music business model.

I’m not so sure about the disruptive power though. Google Video was touted as a marketplace for indie producers when it first launched.

Waterborne was the first full-length movie to make a Gootube debut foregoing a more lucrative (but conventional) distributing offer. The result has been lackluster at best (read, it’s been a complete failure).

Most of the speculation centers around two anticipated products, both dubbed with Apple’s signature “i” prefix: iTV and iPhone.

The iTV is reportedly a digital video recording device and according to industry experts times more likely than the fabled iPhone.

Shaw Wu, an analyst with American Technology Research, said:

While our analysis continues to indicate (Apple’s) first cell phone is technically complete, its `go-to-market’ strategy continues to be a mystery and likely a gating factor.

That’s my gut feel as well – the iPhone has to wait till later in the year. As a consolation, we could soon be staring at a big screen iPod, better suited for video.

By now, there’s no discussion on who posted it first because it can be found on Youtube and Google Video, possibly on other video sharing sites as well (graphic warning, link here).

The Iraqi government has promised that they’ll investigate the execution. It shouldn’t be too difficult to identify who shot and leaked the video. After all, when it’s a handheld POV, it shouldn’t be hard to place the blame.

My concern is that big media might call it citizen journalism taken to the extreme. Cellphone cameras have been known as a “guerrilla” journalist tool. That’s why there’s so much buzz about the Apple iPhone.

Most of the rumors center around Apple’s strength to create a streamlined, easy-to-use gadgets (like the iPod). I am thinking about the difference it could create for video.

Merging a video iPod and a phone could extend the reach of web video publishers. Gootube and other platforms that are being extended for mobile use could benefit as well.

One BIG question remains though – I’m not sure if Apple will make it an open platform. They could as well limit it to the iTunes store.

The article speculates that it’s all related to Google keeping its leading position in search. I think these guys are probably right – though not 100 percent. I bet a lot of this new space will go to some of the new applications that Google is building.

More importantly though, between Google buying Youtube and their own video service, I think Google’s thinking about the future of video. (Don’t forget NBC launched their youtube clone).

Text indexes are one thing. Storing, indexing, analyzing, encoding, hosting, and delivering video is quite another. With the growth of broadband people want to see a lot more than a list of text bits mixed with hyperlinks.

One funny bit was that Joe said he finds Google a lot more threatening than Microsoft. I wonder if the execs at Google have seen it before signing the check.

The conflict lies in the fact that while Apple is charging 1.99 for each music video you download, Youtube lets you do it for free. On top of that, Google struck a deal with three major music labels which basically makes nearly ALL youtube videos as legal as prostitution in Amsterdam. Here’s what Marc is pondering:

So we could have an interesting year of watching Apple to see if this change in where music is discovered impacts their competitive situation. Watching the labels to see how much they can get paid for licensing their catalogues. Will it be 15mm plus ad share per year or get sued ? What will other content providers who didnt get their 15mm think ? Will they sue to prove a point that you cant leave them out ? Will Google just write checks or give stock to the entire universe?

Gizmodo did a pretty good job of coming up with a name of the merger between Google Video and Youtube. They even went so far as to create a logo. I love it.
