Brand stewardship

I have deep respect for Ogilvy (that’s David Ogilvy, not the same as the agency he left behind). One of the key concepts he promoted was the one of the supremacy of the brand, with savvy marketers being its stewards.
I respect him as a marketer but I love his focus on getting the SALE. […]

Internet is for porn

In case you’re in doubt, the Internet is for porn. Warning: Offensive lyrics!

What’s machinima? Machinima is “filmmaking within a real-time, 3D virtual environment, often using 3D video-game technologies.” This particular one is based on Blizzard’s World of Warcraft. Amazing!
P.S. If you’re not into toons, you can check out Steve Ballmer’s Developer video or the […]

Web 2.0 taken, try Web 2.1

Since O’Reilly took web 2.0 and trademarked it, a lot of people have been wondering what it means. It didn’t seem like a big deal until CMP started sending cease-and-desist letters to non-profit organizations doing web conferences.
My legal 2 cents (worth about that much) are just get the next version. If you feel Web 2.1 […]

Mentos + Coke videos

This is a new phenomenon that you can observer in all of its (un)scientific glory at YouTube or Google Video. It appears that when you mix Mentos with diet Coke you get a geyser.
What was the brand manager’s reaction? “It’s an entertaining phenomenon … [but] doesn’t fit with the brand personality of Diet Coke”… Indeed.

I just read Seth Godin’s manifesto on Bootstrapping. It’s a manifesto because it started life at ChangeThis. Seth likes to call it a Bible. Probably because it requires a leap of faith and a lot of prayer.
Right at the start of it, he suggests you print out the following text and tape it to the […]

I’ve been getting links to that video from all kinds of Linux fans. At first, I chose to ignore it, being the agnostic person that I am. But it’s too much fun and I’m already addicted to the song. If you can call it that.
Without further ado… Ladies and gentlemen, I present Steve Ballmer’s smash-hit: […]

God Save the Queen

The Queen turns 80 today (UK’s head of state, duh!) . The first association that I have doesn’t have to do with the Queen at all. It doesn’t have to do with Freddie Mercury’s Queen either.
It is music-related, so if you’ve put your money on ”Freddie”, you were somewhat close. My first association was Sex Pistols‘ God Save the Queen.
There’s […]

Streaming video growth

According to TechWeb, streaming video will grow by some 30-40% annually. Video streams increased by 50.2% in 2005 to 17.95 billion. This includes both free and subscription video streams.
A few more points from Accustream’s executive summary on streaming media growth:

Increased broadband connections (both cable modem and DSL) at the residential level
Ongoing innovation at the application […]

DIY: Community

In my experience, most companies come out as very poor shepherds when it comes to communities.
Case in point: I was reviewing Adobe’s live docs for Flash Media Server 2. There wasn’t a SINGLE comment on any of the docs I viewed. I’m not talking about a discussion, I’m talking about someone saying something.
Guy Kawasaki, an […]

Google and net neutrality

AdSense is already part of my lifestyle (I check it compulsively!). I was expecting the introduction of Google’s click-to-play video ads and voila - I get a note about them.
I visited the AdSense blog to find out more and I saw a message from Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO about network neutrality (that I wrote about in my […]
